Peter Kubicek was a 15 year-old Jewish boy from Slovakia in World War II. As the Germans advanced into Slovakia in 1944, many Jews faced the horrifying reality of deportation to Nazi concentration camps. Peter Kubicek was no exception. As a child, Kubicek endured two Slovak fascist camps and six German camps, and even more remarkably, lived to tell his story. In his book, 1000: 1 ODDS, Memoir of a World War II Childhood, Kubicek retells his story of sadness, suffering and what he credits as pure "luck."
