| Discussion Leader | Gary Schoepfel is a seasoned leader with the Great Books Foundation, Harrison Middleton University, Classical Pursuits and beyond. He looks forward to exploring a sampling of Russiaâ??s foremost writers on this extraordinary literary journey from Moscow to St. Petersburg. |
In Russian culture, the holy fool has a lofty role as a traditional guide, mentor and savior. It found expression in numerous fairy tales about Ivan the Fool and was continuously exploited by dozens of Russian writers, including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Pushkin. This flamboyant Russian type and literary character serves as our guide to Russian metropolises, Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the enchanting towns in between.
We will sail through history and culture in style and comfort on board a floating hotel, the 150-passenger MS Tolstoy. Built in Austria, for Kremlin officials, the Tolstoy is the most luxurious and comfortable cruise ship ever
built for Russian rivers.
We will spend several days in legendary Moscow, then cruise north and visit the picturesque Golden Ring towns of Uglich, Kostroma and Yaroslavl. These towns feature monuments of Russian architecture from the 12th 18th centuries, centuries, including kremlins, monasteries and cathedrals. We continue along the Volga-Baltic waterways
to St. Petersburg, one of the worlds most beautiful, culturally rich cities, often referred to as the Russian Venice. We will experience a kaleidoscope of Russian life and literature.
We are the only group we know of that offers the opportunity to travel through both space and time to destinations like Dantes Italy, Hemingways Paris, or Dickens London. We explore great works of literature in the places where they are set to help us see the world through the eyes of those we read about. At the same time, we inevitably discover universal ideas and experience that transcend time and place. What makes our travel special is the balance of in-depth discussion of illuminating readings, easy guided walks to immerse ourselves in the cultural and natural history of a place, informal talks about the context of our inquiry, generous free time, and exceedingly convivial company. And, of course, exceptional cuisine.
With Classical Pursuits, you will not compromise the spontaneity, flexibility and sense of personal discovery you seek in your own private travels only the logistical details.
As children we constantly wondered Why? and So what? Return to the big questions now, in convivial conversation about great books, music, and art.
