A personal letter from Francis McGovern, the editor & publisher of Literary Traveler

First I want to welcome you to Literary Traveler,  and thank you for visiting. I am especially glad that you have taken the time to learn more about us and to inquire about our premium subscription service.

I am glad because I have the feeling that you are like me. You care a great deal about the books you read and you are passionate about your travels.

I have been publishing Literary Traveler with my wife Linda, for eight years since 1998. Literary Traveler relies on a team of passionate developers, freelance contributors and writers to run the site. We also rely on you, our readers and subscribers for valuable insight, feedback and support. We take pride in the site and the articles we publish and the unique service that we provide.

One of the main reasons for that pride is that we care deeply about the travels we take. We see our job as not just helping you with an idea for your next vacation, or leading you to choose your next tour. Those are both noble aims and we delight when we can find a placement on a tour for one of our readers. Our true aim, above all others is to inspire your travels, to help you learn and explore your literary imagination, to help you become a part of what you have read.

Once you do, your travels will never be the same, and your journeys will always be with you. If you have taken a trip or a tour inspired by literature then you understand what I mean. My suggestion would be that you let your next journey be inspired by your favorite author or book. Has a work of literature always inspired you? I'm sure it has or you probably wouldnt be reading this. Use the tools and ideas on Literary Traveler to plan that next journey.

I remember one of our first literary journeys that we took across America. Linda and I traveled over 6,000 miles in a few weeks one summer visiting writers homes and museums and settings for books and short stories we were researching ideas for articles and projects for the website. We drove from Boston to Virginia, through the Carolinas into Georgia, down deep into Florida (through the Everglades) all the way down to Key West, then all the way to New Orleans, and to the very tip of Louisiana at Grand Isle. Then we made our way slowly back through Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

It was one of the best trips of my life. We saw and experienced so much. We stood in the Great Dismal Swamp, stopped for a visit in Thomas Wolfe's Old Kentucky Home paid our respects at Flannery OConnors grave in Georgia, and at Hemingway's beautiful home in Key West. We remembered Kate Chopin at the Gulf of Mexico, William Faulkner in Oxford, and Huck and Jim on Mark Twains Mississippi River, and many many more. 

Each place we visited helped us understand and think more deeply about the writers we had loved and learned from over the years. My goal in writing you this letter is to invite you to join us as we continue on that journey. We are building a community at Literary Traveler and we want you to be a part of it. We think we have one of the best and most original travel sites on the Internet. We have been written up in the New York Times, The USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal called Literary Traveler A Bookworms Delight.
