Western Civilization owes a great debt to the events and productions of ancient Greece. Along with the Judeo-Christian heritage, classical Greece provided the foundation on which so much that is familiar to us is constructed. We will use a Greek sampler of epic, drama, philosophy to help us visit to the crux of our continuing debates over such fundamental questions as what constitutes heroic behavoir, the relation of human and divine laws, the meaning of civil disobedience, and the nature of love. Greece is much more than old stones and old books. We will take full advantage of the natural beauty and warm hospitality of present day Greece. The port of ancient Mycenae, Napflio is a timeless and romatic town on the Peloponese sheltered in the upper pocket of the Argolic Gulf and guarded by the Venetian island castle of Bourtzi. Streets that are barely if ever used by automobiles, shops, restaurants and cafes sell the same things they have been selling for a century.
