Situated right at the tip of the most magnificent, most mysterious, wildest and most ancient of continents, South Africa is a land of spectacular contrasts, both physically and socially. It's here you'll find the worlds oldest rocks, the world's oldest fossils, and the world's newest democracy.
It was here that our distant ancestors became human, and from here, that we went out to populate the world. And, like almost every country on earth, South Africa has had their bloody periods in history and their shameful past, but as all people, they are moving on.
South Africa is a truly multi-cultural nation. They speak more than eleven different languages, eat a range of different foods, and worship in widely differing ways. They dress differently, do business in different ways, spend leisure time differently. They read different newspapers, watch different TV programs, and tune their car radios to different stations. However, they are one nation and, despite their differences, they continue to develop as a unified people.
How are they doing this? By focusing on the principle we call Ubuntu.
Ubuntu
We exist because other people exist. That's the crux of the concept of Ubuntu.
It is the belief that we are human only because we interact with other people. If we were to ignore the rest of humanity, and try to live in a vacuum, we'd be less than human. It's certainly not a new idea.
