New Mexico Tours - The American Southwest: The Power of Place - Santa Fe, New Mexico
Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose; Georgia OKeefes New Mexico landscape
Discover the power landscape has on how its inhabitants live, think and see the world in Santa Fe, Americas oldest capital city: a city whose beautiful, brown adobe architecture blends with the high desert terrain and whose great art and culinary tradition are recognized world-wide.
We will discuss the epic novel, Angle of Repose, in which Wallace Stegner exposed the myth of Americas West as a land of golden opportunity and fearless cowboys. The landscape becomes a character in its own right, deserving of fear and respect, and forcing its will on the people who carve their homes out of its resistant rock and soil.
Discussion Leader(s): A member of the faculty at St. Johns College, Santa Fe, the premier great books-focused college in the United States, will lead the discussions of Angle of Repose.
Kay Lewis, a fourth generation New Mexican, with sixteen years experience as a custom guide, specializing in history, anthropology and regional art, will guide us on a walking tour of Santa Fe and talk to us about the unique co-existence of strong Native, Spanish and Anglo cultures.
Ann Kirkland, the founder of Classical Pursuits, will host this trip.
