Most visitors come to this part of the state for the breathtaking scenery of white-capped mountains, crystal-clear waters and extended daylight hours; however, Ernest Hemingway has three main places in Sun Valley: a memorial, his home and his grave. The memorial is a bust of the author that overlooks Trail Creek. The inscription reads ?¢??Best of all he loved the fall?¢??¦leaves floating on trout streams.?¢?? While taking a walk to his memorial, one can hunt and fish as well, as Hemingway did in the afternoons. It is best to check with the Chamber of Commerce to see where these activities are allowed. The Hemingway Home, run by The Nature Conservancy, is unfortunately not open to the public due to the last wishes of the author?¢??s widow. However, it is a legal dispute in the area, and many are pushing for public access. The house is where Ernest took his life, and has a great deal of memorabilia. An upcoming event is The Ernest Hemingway Festival, held September 28-October 1, 2006 (call 866-549-5783). Activities include: keynote speakers, panel discussions, tours and even a shootout. The Chamber of Commerce hopes to have the Hemingway Home open during the festival, which would involve much persuasion, but if so, it would be a historic event. The last site is the writer?¢??s grave, a simple stone with beautiful nature all around it.
