Phone: (620) 331-7768 or (800) 842-6063 ext. 5835 Wiliam Inge, (1860 - 1954) Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award-winning playwright, was born and raised in Independence, Kansas, and is commemorated here by the William Inge Center for the Arts and the annual William Inge Theater Festival. Inge?¢??s boyhood home at 514 North Fourth Street still stands, and today houses visiting playwrights-in-residence. Inge is best known for Picnic and Splendor in the Grass. The William Inge Center for the Arts hosts theater and concerts for adults and children, as well as educational programs. The Festival, held in April, includes workshops, conferences, panel discussions, and performances. The Center puts on a festival every year in late April in dedication of its namesake. Festival events include: a scholar conference, writers?¢?? workshop, live entertainment and meeting family and friends of Inge. Tickets can be ordered online a month prior. Visiting playwrights-in-residence live at 514 North Fourth Street, the boyhood home of Inge. Special note: The festival is international and becoming very popular.
