Ernest Thompson Seton (1860 - 1946) was an author, artist, and naturalist. He founded an organization called the Woodcraft Indians, which introduced boys to Native American stories and lore, as well as outdoor skills. Seton wrote a series of articles about the group that would later be called The Birch Bark Rolls (1906). Eventually, the Woodcraft Indians would form the basis for the founding of Boy Scouts of America, of which Seton is considered a co-founder. The strong presence of Native American lore in the Boy Scout tradition is due in large part to Seton's influence.
The Philmont Museum-Seton Memorial Library preserves Seton's work and personal collections and works of art, along with over 6000 volumes of natural history and the history of the Southwest. The museum also includes art and artifacts relating to New Mexico history.
