Lord Byron in East Midlands

By Jennifer Ciotta

This section of England is now known to tourists for a different reason: the film industry.  In East Midlands, located in Lincolnshire, is the Burghley House, used for the exterior and interior shots of the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and most currently, for this year's Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks.  The Lincoln Cathedral has been dubbed in movies (again in Da Vinci Code) for London's Westminster Abbey.  With its gorgeous architecture, during both day and night, the massive structure proves to be a must see.  Other 2005 Pride and Prejudice locations include: Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, where the dining hall served as Elizabeth's bedroom; and Chatsworth, Mr. Darcy's estate, where Elizabeth walks through the hall of statues, and finally succumbs to Darcy's love.

It is fitting that the entertainment industry has made its way into Byron's home, since back in his day, Byron was a modern day heartthrob with his poetry, thus inspiring the term Byron-mania, reminiscent of todays Beatle-mania.  To celebrate, every year is the International Byron Festival.  One can visit his family roots; the town of Southwell, where he spent his school vacations; Newstead Abbey, his home; and his grave at Hucknall Church.

Other exciting festivals also are held in East Midlands.  Silverstone is the sight of the Formula One British Grand Prix.  It holds driving training, track days and premiere races.  The Ride Leicester Festival features all types of cycling; for example, races include: BMX and Dirt-Track; Guided Bike Rides; Cycle Training; Veteran Bike Displays; and films at the Phoenix cinema.  The Robin Hood Festival, in Sherwood Forest Country Park, features actors in capes and old-fashioned dress, archery lessons and staged duals.  The Stamford Shakespeare Festival, with stunning Tolethorpe Hall as its background, holds plays in a 600 seat open-air auditorium.
