Steinbeck in Salinas and Sag Harbor

By Jennifer Ciotta

John Steinbeck's home of Salinas, CA offers a plethora of events year round.  But first, a visit to the National Steinbeck Center is a must, featuring an ultra-modern exterior and interior.  Visitors can tour the author's life through interactive exhibits, fun displays and educational programs for the whole family.  The Center focuses on the underdog, such as the migrant workers Steinbeck befriended, and the fortitude of humanity.  An additional agricultural center is in the works, and donations are gladly accepted.

Salinas hosts the annual California International Airshow, where daredevils such as the US Navy Blue Angels, the Red Baron Squadron and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds dazzle the crowds with aerobatics aloft.  The Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the scene for top car racing summer to fall; meanwhile the California Rodeo kicks off in July.  Two prime golf courses with differing terrains make for excellent practice.

In Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY, Steinbeck and his third wife relaxed by the ocean.  A swim at one of the local beaches or a night stroll are ways to channel Steinbeck's spirit.  Hanging out at the local bars and meeting the town's inhabitants is what the author himself used to do thus a wine tour of Long Island would encompass both of Steinbeck's pastimes.  Sag Harbor presides as the unofficial Hamptons, thus summer is the prime season to rent a cottage, timeshare or simply ride the Jitney bus from New York City for a weekend with friends.
